Kigali – 1 Night
International arrival at Kigali Gregoire Kayibanda International Airport – Transfer to accommodation City of Kigali, which started in 1907 as a small colonial outpost with little link to the outside world, is now 100 years old and evolved into the country’s most important business centre and main port of entry. Kigali has a moderate high altitude climate that belies its tropical location, and is conveniently located within three hours’ drive of the main tourist sites. The Rwandan capital provides both a comfortable and welcoming introduction to this land of a thousand hills and an ideal springboard from which to explore this magical country. Activities: Guided city tour and visit of Genocide Museum
Nyungwe Forest – 2 Nights
Drive from Kigali to Nyungwe (3 to 5 hours) Nyungwe Forest National Park lies in the southwest corner of Rwanda and is a vast untouched tropical rainforest with a high, dense canopy. The heart of Nyungwe Forest is like a scene from a fairy tale. Tall old mahoganies, ebonies and giant tree ferns tower above you, whilst orchids and other epiphytes cling to every branch. Brightly colored birds flit around, butterflies are everywhere, and walking quietly you may even encounter larger forest residents – 13 different species of primates. Activities: Visit of the Nyanza Palace in Butare, Chimp-Tracking
Lake Kivu – 1 Night
Drive from Nyungwe to Lake Kivu (4 to 6 hours) Lake Kivu is Rwanda’s largest lake, and the sixth largest lake in Africa. The drive to Lake Kivu is really lovely as the road gently curves through the hills and mountains beside the lake and each corner you turn will offer another amazing view. Eucalyptus trees line the road, while every inch of the hills seems to be terraced with bananas. Villagers smile and wave and children constantly call out “Abuzungu!" as you drive past (the Kinyarwanda term for white people). The beautiful lake is enclosed by the steep terraced hills that are characteristic of rural Rwanda and sitting on its shores are Cyangugu, Kibuye and Gisenyi that offer water sports or boating to the numerous islands on the lake.Volcanos National Park – 3 Nights
Drive from Lake Kivu to Volcanos National Park (2 to 4 hours) The Virunga Mountains that straddle the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, are home to around 480 mountain gorillas, more than half of the world’s entire population (the rest live in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda). In Volcanoes National Park, the Rwandan part of the Virungas, ten gorilla groups are now habituated for gorilla safaris, more than anywhere else in the world. Go on a magical track through dense rainforest and look into the eyes of a large silverback gorilla be amazed by his thoughtful and intelligent gaze being mindful of you being another individual. The tracking can be quite long and exhausting but any apprehensions you might have had during your track will melt away the minute you see your gorilla family.
